The biggest practical difference is that UIUC computer science is an exceptionally capacity-constrained, direct-admission program, while UMass Amherst CS is still selective but may be a more attainable option for an applicant with a strong academic record. At UIUC, your likelihood is tied very closely to the specific CS program or CS+X program you list, not to the university’s overall admission profile. At UMass Amherst, apply with the understanding that CS has its own demand and should not be judged by UMass’s overall selectivity either.

For both schools, compare your record against admitted CS applicants, not against students applying to less selective majors. The most relevant pieces are sustained top performance in the most rigorous math and science sequence your school offers, including calculus when available; strong grades in advanced coursework; and evidence that your interest in computing extends beyond simply taking a class.
