Amherst is also highly respected, but its reputation is more concentrated among people who know liberal arts colleges well.

For a student who cares about instant name recognition, broad social cachet, and a school name that almost anyone will immediately recognize, Harvard has the edge by a lot. That matters in casual prestige conversations, international settings, and fields where institutional brand is especially visible. Even people with little knowledge of higher education usually know Harvard.

Amherst fits a different kind of student: someone who values elite academic reputation but does not need mass-market prestige. Among academics, graduate schools, employers familiar with top liberal arts colleges, and people in higher education, Amherst is seen as an exceptional school. It is often viewed as intellectually serious, very selective, and unusually strong for undergraduate teaching.

Part of the mixed opinion you hear comes from the fact that Amherst can be admired more intensely in certain circles than by the general public. Someone deeply familiar with U.S. colleges may place Amherst extremely high, sometimes even preferring its undergraduate experience. But that is different from overall prestige in the broadest sense.
