Is Amherst or UChicago more prestigious?

The biggest practical tradeoff is name recognition versus small-college cachet. UChicago usually has broader national and international visibility, especially among people outside higher ed, while Amherst carries a very strong reputation in admissions and academic circles but is more tied to the liberal arts college world. Both are viewed as elite, but they are prestigious in somewhat different lanes.

Among students, parents, and employers who know universities by brand alone, UChicago often reads as the more instantly recognizable name. It has a major research university profile, a globally known economics and intellectual culture reputation, and visibility that comes from graduate programs, research output, and city location. That tends to make its prestige feel more public-facing.

Amherst, though, is extremely respected by admissions officers, faculty, and people who follow undergraduate education closely. It is often seen as one of the very top liberal arts colleges in the country, with a reputation for close faculty access, serious academics, and excellent placement into graduate school, fellowships, and selective employers. In those circles, Amherst is not seen as a step below so much as a different type of top-tier institution.

So if you mean broad-name prestige, UChicago probably has the edge. If you mean how highly informed academic people regard undergraduate quality and selectivity, Amherst is right there and can match it in stature. UChicago carries more mainstream prestige, while Amherst has a more specialized but equally serious kind of prestige among people who really know colleges.
