The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and setting: Northwestern gives you a larger, busier social world tied to both a Big Ten campus and the Chicago area, while Colgate offers a smaller, more self-contained community where campus life is the center of almost everything. At Northwestern, there are far more student groups, events, and types of people, which can make it easier to find a niche but also easier to feel like you have to seek it out actively. At Colgate, the student body is small enough that campus can feel tight-knit quickly, but the social scene is also narrower because the school and the town are much smaller.

Northwestern tends to feel more energetic and varied day to day. You have the lakefront campus, strong school spirit, a visible arts scene, and easy access to Evanston and Chicago for food, internships, concerts, and weekends off campus. Social life is not built around one single thing, so students often piece together their community through clubs, performances, research, cultural groups, residential communities, and friend circles.
