Berkeley has an enormous number of student organizations, major campus events, advocacy groups, publications, research-linked clubs, and startup or public-service opportunities tied to the Bay Area. Riverside has plenty of clubs and campus involvement too, but students often describe the environment as more approachable and less intimidating when trying to get involved.

If your priority is having the widest possible menu of extracurriculars, Berkeley has the edge. Its size, reputation, and location create more ways to connect with faculty, nonprofits, political organizations, tech-adjacent projects, cultural groups, and highly active student communities. For someone who wants niche clubs or a very intense ecosystem of student activity, Berkeley is hard to beat.

But if your priority is actually getting in the door and having your involvement matter quickly, Riverside can be stronger in practice.
