Is Arizona State or UC Berkeley more prestigious for college admissions and job applications?
I’m trying to compare these two schools from the perspective of how people usually view the name on a resume or application. I know they’re very different schools, but I’m mainly wondering which one tends to carry more prestige in general.

In general, UC Berkeley carries substantially more prestige than Arizona State on both college admissions applications and most job applications. Berkeley has a long-standing national and international reputation, and tends to signal a more selective academic environment. Arizona State is respected in many areas and has strong programs, but its overall name recognition usually does not carry the same elite academic weight.
For graduate school or other college admissions, Berkeley’s name usually stands out more immediately. Admissions readers are likely to associate it with rigorous academics, strong faculty, and a highly accomplished student body. That can matter most in fields where institutional reputation is noticed quickly, especially in academic, research, policy, and tech-oriented settings.
For employers, Berkeley also tends to have the stronger brand in a broad, national sense. In industries like technology, finance, consulting, engineering, and research, the Berkeley name often has more built-in credibility. It also has a very powerful alumni network and employer familiarity, especially on the West Coast but also well beyond it.
That said, prestige is not the same as outcome. Arizona State can still lead to excellent jobs and graduate school options, especially if you do well, build experience, and take advantage of strong programs in your field. On a resume, a Berkeley name may open more doors at first glance, but internships, grades, research, and skills still matter a lot once you are being seriously evaluated.
So if the question is strictly about how the school name is perceived in general, UC Berkeley is the clearer answer.
