Which university is generally considered more prestigious: Arizona State University or Boston University?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Boston University carries a more traditional, broadly recognized private-university reputation, while Arizona State offers the scale, resources, and program-specific opportunities of a major public research university, often with a different cost structure. BU’s location in Boston also places students near a dense concentration of employers, hospitals, research institutions, and other universities. ASU has a very large alumni network, strong industry connections in the Phoenix area, and particular visibility in fields such as engineering, business, journalism, education, and sustainability.

In a general national reputation comparison, Boston University is more often viewed as the more prestigious institution overall. Employers and graduate programs are familiar with both schools, but BU’s long-established academic profile and private-university brand tend to give it stronger broad-name recognition, especially in the Northeast and in more traditional prestige-conscious settings.

That does not mean an ASU degree is a disadvantage. ASU is a respected R1 research university, and a student’s major, internships, research, grades, and professional experience will matter far more than this reputation gap in most hiring decisions. For certain programs and in the Southwest, ASU can be exceptionally well connected and may offer better value.
