Which college is better for a career in finance: Bowdoin or Columbia?

I’m trying to figure out which school would give me a stronger path into finance after college. I like both Bowdoin and Columbia for different reasons, but I’m mainly thinking about recruiting, alumni connections, and how well each school is viewed by employers in finance.

I know one is much smaller and the other is in New York, so I’m wondering how that affects opportunities for students who want investment banking, private equity, or related roles.

Columbia is the stronger option for a finance career because it offers far more direct access to recruiting, alumni, and in-semester opportunities in New York City. For investment banking especially, being in Manhattan matters: students can attend firm events easily, network with alumni face to face, and pursue part-time internships during the school year. Columbia is also a very familiar target school for many major finance employers, which tends to translate into a deeper on-campus recruiting presence.

Location is the biggest differentiator. At Columbia, students can realistically build finance experience before junior summer through internships during fall or spring, coffee chats with alumni downtown, and frequent employer-sponsored events. That kind of proximity is unusually valuable in finance, where networking and timing play a major role in recruiting.

Bowdoin can still place students into finance, especially through its loyal alumni base and strong overall reputation, but the path is less built around immediate access. You would likely need to be more proactive about travel, networking, and securing off-campus opportunities, since you would not have the same day-to-day proximity to firms. Bowdoin’s smaller size can create close faculty and advising relationships, but for finance specifically, Columbia’s ecosystem is simply much more advantageous.

For investment banking, private equity, or similar fields where early exposure and dense recruiting matter, Columbia gives you more momentum from day one.
