Which is better for finance careers: Bowdoin or Santa Clara University?
I’m a high school senior trying to decide between Bowdoin and Santa Clara, and I’m interested in finance after college. Both seem like good schools, but I’m not sure which one gives students a stronger path into banking, investment management, or other finance jobs.
I’m mostly trying to understand which school tends to have better recruiting, alumni connections, and overall placement into finance careers.

For finance, Santa Clara usually offers the more direct path if you want to recruit into West Coast business and finance roles early, while Bowdoin can be very strong for a student who wants a liberal arts setting and is comfortable being more proactive about breaking into selective finance circles. Santa Clara has the Leavey School of Business, sits right in Silicon Valley, and gives students easier day-to-day access to internships during the school year. Bowdoin does not have an undergraduate business major, but its alumni network is notably loyal and it has a real track record of sending driven students into finance, especially when they build economics, math, or government backgrounds well.
Santa Clara fits the student who wants finance to be part of college from the start. You can study business directly, join finance-related clubs in a campus culture where business careers are very visible, and tap into Bay Area internships in corporate finance, wealth management, venture-related finance, and investment roles. For someone who learns by doing and wants a smoother on-ramp into internships, Santa Clara has a practical advantage.
Bowdoin fits the student who wants a more traditional liberal arts experience and is willing to hustle for finance recruiting. Its smaller scale and alumni culture can help a lot, particularly for networking-heavy paths like investment banking or buy-side recruiting, but you will need to seek out those opportunities intentionally. Bowdoin can work especially well for students who are strong writers, analytical thinkers, and comfortable turning an economics or math education into a finance story.
For broader finance placement and easier access to internships during college, Santa Clara is often the more straightforward option because of location and the business school structure.
If you want built-in business training and frequent proximity to employers, Santa Clara has a clearer runway. If you want a highly respected liberal arts college and are confident you will network aggressively, Bowdoin can absolutely open strong finance doors.
