Is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Northwestern better for business majors?

Northwestern has the stronger overall brand for business outcomes, but UIUC is the more established undergraduate business option because it has a full business school for undergrads through Gies College of Business. That matters because Gies offers a direct business curriculum, a large alumni base in accounting, finance, consulting, and supply chain, and a very visible recruiting pipeline for students who want traditional business majors. Northwestern is excellent for careers tied to business, but its structure is a little different since undergraduates do not major in business in the same standard way.

UIUC’s biggest advantage is the program itself. Gies is widely respected, especially in accounting, finance, and related fields, and employers know how to recruit there at scale. If you want a classic undergraduate business experience with business majors, business clubs, on-campus recruiting tied directly to that school, and a large cohort of peers doing the same thing, UIUC has the clearer edge.

Northwestern’s biggest differentiator is prestige and access, especially for highly competitive internships and jobs. Even without a traditional undergrad business major, students can study economics, industrial engineering, learning and organizational change, or other fields and still land strong placements in consulting, finance, and tech. The Kellogg name also adds real halo value, and Northwestern’s location near Chicago helps with networking, alumni connections, and internship access during the school year.

For pure undergraduate business education, UIUC is usually the more straightforward and specialized choice. For overall name recognition and elite placement power, Northwestern carries more weight. So if you mean “better for majoring in business itself,” UIUC has the more direct answer, while Northwestern is often seen as stronger for broader prestige and top-tier career access.
