How much harder is MIT admissions than Tufts admissions for a strong STEM student?

I’m trying to get a realistic sense of how much more selective MIT is compared with Tufts for someone who’s strong in math and science. I know both are competitive, but I’m mostly wondering how admissions difficulty differs in a general sense.

I’m not asking about current acceptance rates or this year’s numbers. I just want a clear comparison of how tough each school is to get into for a high school student with a strong academic profile.

MIT is meaningfully harder to get into than Tufts, even for a student with very strong math and science credentials. Another practical difference is that MIT has a much narrower margin for being merely "excellent." At Tufts, a top student in STEM may still be one of the more distinctive academic applicants in the pool. At MIT, that student may blend in unless there is something especially rare about the depth, creativity, or scale of their work.

So in plain terms: both are highly competitive, but MIT is in a different tier of admissions difficulty. For a strong STEM student, Tufts can still be a reach, while MIT is often a reach even for students who look outstanding almost anywhere else.
