Which is considered more fun, Howard University or Penn State?

Penn State is more widely seen as the more overtly “fun” campus in the traditional college sense, mostly because of its huge residential campus, major sports culture, and constant student activity in a classic college-town setting. State College revolves around the university, so game days, clubs, concerts, and weekend events tend to feel very visible and all-encompassing. Howard has plenty of energy too, but the vibe is different: more city-based, culturally driven, and tied to Washington, D.C. rather than one self-contained campus scene.

One big difference is school spirit. Penn State has an unusually strong shared identity built around football, campus traditions, and a student body that is heavily centered in one place. That creates the kind of day-to-day atmosphere where there is almost always something happening on or near campus, and students often describe the community as intensely spirited.

Howard stands out in a different way through its social and cultural life. Homecoming is famous, the campus has a strong sense of pride and history, and being in D.C. opens up restaurants, nightlife, internships, and events beyond campus. For some students, that is actually more exciting than a traditional college-town environment, but it can feel less unified if what you want is one dominant campus social scene.

The day-to-day experience also differs because Penn State is more immersive. More students live in or around the same campus ecosystem, which makes spontaneous socializing easier and gives the school a more constant buzz. Howard offers a lively student experience too, but more of the fun comes from combining campus traditions with city life, so it feels less like one nonstop bubble.
