Howard vs Ohio State campus size: which one has a more compact campus?

Howard has the more compact campus. Its main campus in Washington, DC is much smaller and denser, so most academic buildings, residence halls, and student spaces are closer together and easier to cover on foot. Ohio State’s Columbus campus is much larger, with a broader footprint and longer walks between some parts of campus.

One clear difference is scale. Howard feels like an urban campus where key buildings are packed into a tighter area, which makes everyday movement more straightforward. At Ohio State, the campus is big enough that where your classes and housing are located can noticeably affect your daily walking time.

The street layout also makes the experience different. Howard is integrated into the city grid, so it tends to feel more condensed even though it is in an urban setting. Ohio State is still very walkable, but it functions more like a large flagship campus, with major roads, big open areas, and more distance between some destinations.

For getting around without extra transit, Howard is usually easier. At Ohio State, many students walk plenty, but buses, bikes, or e-scooters can become more useful simply because the campus covers more ground.
