Is UNC Charlotte or Ohio State better for an economics major?

I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down my college list and I’m interested in studying economics. Both UNC Charlotte and Ohio State are on my radar, but I’m not sure which one would be the stronger choice for an econ major.

I’m mainly trying to understand which school tends to offer a better overall economics program and student experience for someone who may want internships or grad school later on.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and reach versus a more intimate, city-linked setup. Ohio State has the larger, more established economics ecosystem, with more course variety, a bigger faculty presence, stronger name recognition nationally, and a wider alumni network. UNC Charlotte’s advantage is its location in a major banking and business city, which can make local internships especially accessible and give the program a more directly applied feel.

For economics specifically, Ohio State is usually the stronger academic option. It has a deeper bench in the field, more upper-level electives, more research activity, and better built-in preparation if you think you may want a PhD, policy work, or a more theory-heavy graduate path later. A large flagship like Ohio State also tends to offer more opportunities to connect economics with math, data analytics, public policy, and business.

UNC Charlotte is still a reasonable choice, especially if you want to stay in North Carolina or are drawn to Charlotte’s finance and corporate presence. For a student interested in applied economics, business-adjacent roles, or internships during the school year, being in Charlotte can be a real plus. The student experience may also feel easier to navigate for someone who does not want the sheer size of Ohio State.

For internships and grad school, I would give Ohio State the edge overall, while UNC Charlotte has a narrower but meaningful advantage for local employer access. If both were similarly affordable, Ohio State would be the more compelling pick for economics. If UNC Charlotte is much cheaper and you would actively use Charlotte-based internship opportunities, that can absolutely make it the smarter decision.
