For economics, is UNC Charlotte or William & Mary the better college choice?
I’m trying to decide between UNC Charlotte and William & Mary and I want to study economics. I’m mostly looking at which school is better for an econ major in terms of academics, internship opportunities, and overall reputation.
I’m not sure how much the school name matters for economics, so I’m trying to compare the two in a practical way.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UNC Charlotte gives you direct access to a major banking city and frequent local internship opportunities during the school year, while William & Mary offers a more established academic reputation in economics and a stronger national signal on your resume. For economics specifically, William & Mary is usually seen as the more academically prestigious option, but Charlotte’s location can create real advantages if you want hands-on finance, banking, or corporate experience early. School name does matter some in economics, especially for first internships and your first job, and William & Mary tends to carry more weight there.
Academically, William & Mary has the stronger edge. Its economics department has a long-standing reputation, the school is known for strong undergraduate teaching, and it places well into consulting, finance, policy, and graduate study.
UNC Charlotte is still a solid option, especially if you are interested in applied economics, business-adjacent paths, or staying in North Carolina. Its biggest asset is Charlotte itself: major banks, corporate headquarters, and a large business network nearby. That can make it easier to intern during the semester, build local connections, and translate coursework into experience.
On reputation alone, William & Mary comes out ahead. In many circles, especially outside the Southeast, it is more immediately recognized as a highly respected undergraduate institution. That matters most when employers are doing quick resume screens or when you are competing for selective early-career roles.
If cost is similar, I would lean William & Mary for economics because the academic reputation is stronger and the degree will usually travel better. If UNC Charlotte is meaningfully cheaper and you are serious about using the Charlotte location for internships from your first year onward, that can absolutely outweigh the prestige gap.
