Which is better for internships: Carnegie Mellon or UC San Diego?

Carnegie Mellon has the edge for internships overall, especially if you are looking at tech, engineering, computer science, robotics, design, or business roles that recruit heavily through a university pipeline.

One big differentiator is recruiting intensity on campus. CMU tends to have very structured, high-volume recruiting from major employers, particularly in software, hardware, quantitative fields, and related industries.

Another difference is how the academic culture connects to internship readiness. At CMU, many programs are built around project-based work, team collaboration, and applied technical training, which translates cleanly into internship recruiting.

UC San Diego is still excellent for internships, and its location is a real advantage. Being in San Diego puts students near biotech, life sciences, defense, health, and engineering employers. For students interested in biology, bioengineering, chemistry, ocean-related fields, public health, or Southern California industry networks, UCSD can be especially well positioned.

The tradeoff is that UC San Diego is much larger, so internship access can feel a bit more self-directed and competitive internally. There are plenty of opportunities, but students often need to be more proactive about using the career center, networking, and reaching out beyond formal campus recruiting. At CMU, the recruiting pipeline is often more visible and easier to plug into as an undergrad.
