Is UChicago or UPenn better for internships?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location and recruiting style: Penn gives you immediate access to Philadelphia plus frequent pipelines into New York, while UChicago offers strong internship outcomes too but often with a more self-directed search and a heavier concentration in Chicago-based recruiting. For undergrads focused on internships, Penn tends to feel more plugged into employer networks earlier, especially in business, finance, consulting, healthcare, and media-adjacent roles. UChicago absolutely places students well, but Penn usually makes the process feel more visible and structured.

Penn has a real advantage because of Wharton and the broader campus culture around pre-professional recruiting. Even outside Wharton, Penn students benefit from employer presence, alumni connections, and a student body that is very engaged with internships during the school year and over the summer. Career services and student organizations there often create a faster on-ramp into recruiting timelines, especially for industries that hire early.

UChicago has excellent access in fields like economics, public policy, research, consulting, tech, and finance, and its brand is very strong with employers. But the culture is a bit less overtly pre-professional, so students often need to be more intentional about networking and pursuing opportunities. Chicago is a major city with strong internship options, but the campus-to-employer pipeline can feel less automatic than Penn’s in some sectors.

If your definition of “better for internships” is easiest access to recruiting, denser employer traffic, and a campus environment that constantly pushes internship opportunities in front of you, Penn has the edge. If you prefer a more intellectual environment and are comfortable being proactive, UChicago can still deliver excellent internships, but Penn is the more effective choice for internship access overall.
