UC Berkeley vs Boston University for business: which is better for undergraduate business opportunities?

I’m trying to decide between UC Berkeley and Boston University for business and I’m mainly focused on the overall undergraduate experience, not just rankings. I want to know which school tends to offer stronger opportunities for internships, networking, recruiting, and getting involved in business-related clubs or programs.

I’m a current high school senior trying to choose a place that would set me up well for a business career after college.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UC Berkeley usually gives you a more powerful business brand and denser access to top-tier recruiting, while Boston University often offers a more straightforward path to city-based internships during the school year and a slightly more contained undergraduate experience. Berkeley’s Haas School of Business is especially well known with employers, and the Bay Area puts you close to consulting, tech, startups, venture capital, and finance-adjacent roles. BU benefits from being in Boston, where students can intern during the semester more easily with local firms in finance, marketing, management, and healthcare business.

For undergraduate business opportunities specifically, Berkeley tends to have the stronger ceiling. Haas carries major name recognition, and Berkeley has a very active ecosystem of finance, consulting, entrepreneurship, and investing clubs. The student organizations there can be excellent, but they are also known for being selective and competitive, so access to the most sought-after clubs and pipelines is not always automatic.

BU’s Questrom School of Business is also well respected and often feels more accessible day to day. Students can plug into business courses, clubs, case competitions, and internships in Boston without quite the same level of intensity that Berkeley can bring. That can matter if you want hands-on experience early and consistently, especially during fall and spring semesters rather than only in the summer.

On recruiting and networking, Berkeley usually has the edge for national prestige and reach, especially for students aiming at high-paying finance, consulting, tech business roles, or startups. Alumni presence is very strong, and the Berkeley-Haas network is valuable. BU’s network is solid too, particularly in the Northeast, but it does not usually carry the same across-the-board pull in elite business circles.

If your main question is which school opens more doors for undergraduate business outcomes, I’d lean UC Berkeley, especially if you are comfortable with a more competitive environment and are serious about pursuing the highest-level recruiting tracks. I’d pick BU over Berkeley only if you strongly value being in Boston during the academic year, want a more accessible business experience, or think you would make better use of opportunities in a less intense campus culture.
