Is UC Berkeley or UC Merced better for undergraduate research opportunities?

The biggest tradeoff is prestige and breadth versus access and ease of entry. UC Berkeley has far more research happening across more departments, labs, and affiliated institutes, but it is also a much larger and more competitive environment. UC Merced offers fewer total labs and a narrower range of fields, yet undergraduates often have an easier time getting faculty attention and joining projects earlier.

For pure volume of opportunity, Berkeley is ahead. If you want options in engineering, chemistry, computer science, public health, economics, or highly specialized interdisciplinary work, Berkeley has much more going on.

The catch is that access at Berkeley can take more initiative. In some departments, especially popular STEM fields, students may need to email multiple professors, build relationships in office hours, or wait until they have relevant coursework before landing a lab role. Research is there, but you are competing with many other ambitious students.

Merced is often better for access and support. Because it is smaller, faculty are typically more approachable, class sizes are often more manageable, and undergraduates can stand out faster. Students who want hands-on involvement early, including first or second year, may find the path less crowded and more personal.

That said, Merced cannot match Berkeley’s overall scale, funding ecosystem, or variety of projects. If you already know you want a niche area, Berkeley is more likely to have multiple labs in that specialty. At Merced, the right opportunity depends more heavily on whether your interests align with the faculty and research areas currently there.

Berkeley is the stronger place for undergraduate research overall, but Merced can be the better place for actually getting into research quickly. If your priority is the widest and deepest set of opportunities, choose Berkeley. If your priority is early access, close faculty mentorship, and a less crowded path into a lab, Merced has a real advantage.
