Is Florida State University or UT Austin harder to get into overall?

UT Austin is harder to get into overall. It draws a very large national applicant pool, is especially competitive for students applying from outside Texas, and many of its most popular majors are significantly tougher to enter than the university as a whole. Florida State is also selective and has become more competitive in recent years, but overall it is not as difficult to access as UT Austin.

A big reason is how UT Austin handles admissions. Texas students who qualify under the state’s automatic admission policy fill a large share of the class, which leaves fewer seats for everyone else and makes non-auto-admit and out-of-state admission especially tight.

Florida State is competitive too, especially for out-of-state merit seekers and students aiming for honors or top scholarships. But in broad selectivity terms, it is usually more attainable than UT Austin, and it does not have the same in-state auto-admit structure squeezing the remaining spots.

For a student building a college list, I would treat UT Austin as the more selective reach, particularly if you are not a Texas resident or you are applying to a high-demand major. Florida State is still a school to take seriously, but it typically sits a step below UT Austin in overall admissions difficulty.
