Is Florida State University or Wake Forest University more difficult to get into?

I’m a high school senior comparing Florida State and Wake Forest and trying to understand which school is generally more selective during the admissions process. I’m looking for a broad comparison of admission difficulty rather than a comparison based on one specific year’s acceptance rate.

The biggest practical difference is that Wake Forest evaluates applicants within a much smaller, private-university applicant pool and has a more selective overall admissions process, while Florida State admits a larger class but is still highly competitive, especially for out-of-state applicants and popular programs. Wake Forest’s admitted students tend to present exceptionally strong academic records, and its review places substantial weight on essays, recommendations, activities, and demonstrated personal fit. Florida State also gives major weight to grades, course rigor, and academic preparation, with Florida residency affecting the admissions landscape.

Wake Forest is more difficult to get into overall. Its smaller enrollment and more individualized, holistic review mean strong numbers alone do not make admission predictable. Applying test-optional at Wake Forest can be appropriate when scores do not strengthen the application, but the rest of the file needs to be particularly compelling.

Florida State should not be treated as a safety simply because it is a public university. Admission has become increasingly competitive, and applicants need a rigorous high school curriculum and strong grades, particularly in core academic courses. FSU may be comparably challenging for certain applicants depending on residency and academic profile.
