Is Florida State or Miami University better for value for an in-state student?

For an in-state student, Florida State usually comes out ahead on value. If your priority is keeping costs down while still getting a well-known public university experience, FSU is the more financially sensible choice in most cases.

Miami University can still make sense for a student who specifically wants its campus culture, class style, or academic environment enough to justify the higher price. Miami is known for a traditional residential college feel, strong undergraduate teaching, and an attractive college-town setting in Oxford, Ohio. For some students, that experience is worth paying more for, but it usually is not the value winner if you are comparing likely cost side by side.

FSU tends to fit the student who wants a lower net price, more flexibility in majors and campus opportunities, and a higher chance of graduating with less debt. As a Florida public university, it is built to be affordable for Florida residents. It also has honors options, research, internships, and a lively campus in Tallahassee, so the lower price does not mean you are giving up a full college experience.

Miami fits better for someone who is drawn to a more contained, classic campus environment and is comfortable paying a premium for that atmosphere. If Miami offers you unusually strong merit aid, the gap can shrink enough to make it a more serious value contender. But absent a special scholarship package, most in-state Florida students will find that Florida State delivers more per dollar.
