Which is better for ROI: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or UC San Diego?

I am trying to compare these two schools from a value perspective, not just rankings. I know both are strong public universities, but I want to understand which one tends to give a better return on investment after graduation.

I am mainly thinking about the balance between cost, starting salary, and long-term career payoff.

UIUC has the edge on ROI for most students, mainly because it is often cheaper than UC San Diego while still delivering very strong outcomes in high-paying fields. It is especially compelling for engineering, computer science, business, and accounting, where employer recruiting is deep and national. UC San Diego is also an excellent investment, but its value case is strongest when the net price is close to UIUC’s or when you specifically want its research and Southern California industry connections.

Cost is the biggest separator. For many out-of-state students, UC San Diego can be very expensive, and California publics are not usually known for generous need-based aid to nonresidents. UIUC is not cheap for nonresidents either, but in many cases its total cost still comes in lower, which matters a lot when two schools both lead to strong jobs. If you are in-state for California, though, UC San Diego becomes much more competitive on value.

Career placement gives UIUC a real advantage in several majors tied to high starting pay. Its engineering and CS programs have a long-established recruiting pipeline with major tech, manufacturing, consulting, and trading employers, and its business school is well regarded too. That combination often makes it easier to convert the degree into a high first salary, which is a big part of ROI.

UC San Diego stands out more for research, life sciences, biotech, and the broader San Diego innovation ecosystem. If your path is bioengineering, biology, neuroscience, public health, or work connected to hospitals and biotech firms, UC San Diego can pay off very well over time because of its location and research volume. For students aiming at graduate school or research-heavy careers, that ecosystem can add value beyond immediate salary.

Long term, both schools have strong alumni networks and respected brands, but UIUC tends to look more efficient from a pure dollars-in, salary-out perspective. UC San Diego catches up when in-state tuition applies, when aid narrows the gap, or when your intended field lines up directly with its strongest industry ties.
