Is Vanderbilt or Notre Dame better for economics majors?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both Vanderbilt and Notre Dame are on it. I’m interested in studying economics and want to know which school tends to be the stronger choice for that major.

I’m mostly trying to compare the overall economics program and how well each school sets students up for internships, grad school, or jobs after graduation.

Vanderbilt has the edge for economics majors. Its economics department is especially well integrated with strong quantitative coursework, access to research through a major research university, and a location in Nashville that creates a wide range of internship options during the school year.

One important difference is the academic structure of the major itself. Vanderbilt’s economics program sits in a university environment with substantial cross-registration opportunities in math, data science, public policy, business-adjacent fields, and research centers, which makes it easier to build a more technical or specialized economics path. That matters because economics outcomes often improve when students can pair the major with statistics, econometrics, computer science, or policy work rather than treating it as a standalone liberal arts degree.

Another differentiator is internships and professional access during college. Nashville gives Vanderbilt students meaningful in-semester opportunities in healthcare, finance, consulting, government, and nonprofits.

For graduate school preparation, Vanderbilt’s research profile helps. Students aiming for PhD programs or more analytical master’s pathways often benefit from faculty research access, econometrics depth, and the ability to take rigorous supporting coursework. Notre Dame is still a very good option, particularly if you value its distinctive campus culture, tight-knit alumni network, and strong overall career support, but on the economics question alone, Vanderbilt is the one I would put first.
