Is Harvard or Dartmouth generally easier to get into for admissions chances?

For most applicants, Dartmouth is usually viewed as slightly more attainable than Harvard, but both are still clear reaches even for very strong students. Harvard tends to attract the broadest and deepest applicant pool, including a huge number of top academic candidates from around the world. Dartmouth is also highly selective, just not usually seen as quite as impossible as Harvard in the general admissions conversation.

That difference matters most for students who are already competitive on paper and are trying to sort reaches into “extreme reach” versus “still a reach, but a bit more plausible.” Harvard often sits in that most difficult category because of its scale, name recognition, and volume of exceptional applicants. Dartmouth is still an Ivy with very tough admissions, but it is more commonly described as a place where a strong, well-matched applicant has marginally better odds.

In practice, the student who may feel more aligned with Dartmouth is someone who wants a smaller undergraduate-focused environment, a more close-knit campus culture, and can show a real fit for that setting.

Harvard is the place many students apply to simply because it is Harvard, which makes the competition especially intense across nearly every category. A student with outstanding academics, major extracurricular distinction, and broad intellectual ambition can still absolutely be denied there because the bar is so high and the applicant pool is so saturated. So if the question is strictly which one is easier to get into, the usual answer is Dartmouth by a small margin, not by enough to treat it as anything other than a reach.
