University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs University of Washington for informatics: which is better?

University of Washington has the edge for informatics. Its Informatics major is a flagship program within the Information School, the curriculum is built specifically around human-centered technology and data, and Seattle gives students unusually direct access to tech internships, research, and industry networking during the school year.

The biggest differentiator is the program itself. At Washington, Informatics is a distinct, well-known major with concentrations that connect computing to design, data, policy, and user experience. If by “informatics” you mean the interdisciplinary field that blends technology with people, systems, and information, UW is one of the clearest and most established places to study exactly that.

Location matters a lot here too. Being in Seattle puts students close to major tech employers, startups, hospitals, research organizations, and nonprofit tech spaces, which is especially useful for a field like informatics that often leads to product, UX, data, information architecture, and applied tech roles. That proximity can make part-time work, networking, and internships during the academic year easier than at many college towns.

UIUC is excellent in tech, but its reputation is driven more by computer science and engineering than by a standout informatics identity. If a student is deciding between the two specifically for informatics, Washington’s branding, course ecosystem, and employer recognition line up more directly with that interest. UIUC is still a very strong university for quantitative and technical study, but for informatics in particular, UW is usually the more natural match.

One practical caveat is admission structure. Washington’s Informatics major can be very competitive to enter, so it is worth looking carefully at how students apply to the major and how much flexibility there is if plans change.
