How difficult is it to get admitted to UNC compared with Michigan State?

UNC is substantially harder to get into than Michigan State, and that gap is especially noticeable for students applying from out of state. UNC Chapel Hill is one of the most selective public universities in the country, while Michigan State is much more accessible for solid students with strong grades and a credible course load. For an average strong applicant, UNC is usually a reach or at least a very uncertain target, whereas Michigan State is often in the more realistic or likely range.

UNC tends to attract a very dense pool of high-achieving applicants, and its out-of-state enrollment is limited by state policy, which makes admission even tighter for non-North Carolina residents. Even in-state students need a strong transcript, challenging classes, and a compelling overall application to be competitive. In practice, UNC is the kind of school where plenty of well-qualified students are still denied.

Michigan State fits a different type of applicant. It is a large public university with broad academic offerings and a more accessible admissions process for students who have put together a solid high school record. A strong student can absolutely be competitive there without needing the same level of distinction that UNC often expects.
