The University of Michigan is more selective for undergraduate admissions than Ohio State. It is also one of the most sought-after public universities nationally, which raises the bar further in many applicant groups.

One concrete difference is residency impact. Michigan is notably harder for non-Michigan residents because demand from out-of-state students is very strong, while Ohio State, although still selective, is usually more accessible across a broader range of solid applicants. For in-state applicants, both are competitive flagship publics, but Michigan still tends to be the tougher admit.
