Northwestern vs USC for entertainment careers: which is better for networking and internships?

I’m trying to decide between Northwestern and USC, and I’m interested in working in entertainment after college. Both seem strong in different ways, but I’m not sure which one gives students better access to networking and internships in film, TV, or media.

I want to understand which school tends to be more helpful for breaking into the industry as an undergraduate.

USC has the clearer edge for entertainment networking and internships, especially if you want film, TV, or media access during the school year. Its Los Angeles location matters a lot, because students can intern at studios, production companies, agencies, and networks without having to wait for summer. USC also has unusually deep ties to the entertainment industry through both its School of Cinematic Arts and its broader alumni presence across Hollywood.

The biggest differentiator is proximity. At USC, students can realistically build industry experience while classes are in session, which is a major advantage in entertainment where repeated exposure, coffee chats, assistant roles, and part-time internships often lead to the next opportunity. Being in LA also makes it easier to attend screenings, panels, alumni events, and informal networking opportunities that are much harder to access from Evanston.

A second difference is the density of entertainment-specific infrastructure. USC is especially well wired into film and television, with strong pipelines through cinematic arts, communications, screenwriting, production, and business-adjacent paths connected to media.

Northwestern is still a real contender, particularly for students interested in media from a performance, writing, journalism, theater, or producing angle. Its alumni network is powerful, and its strength in theater and communication can absolutely translate into entertainment careers. But for undergraduates trying to break in early and often, Northwestern students usually need to be more strategic about using summers, quarter breaks, and alumni outreach because they are farther from the center of the industry.

For networking and internships specifically, USC gives you more immediate reps, more local access, and more entertainment-adjacent opportunities built into undergraduate life.
