UC San Diego vs USC for finance careers: which has better recruiting and alumni network?

I’m trying to decide between UC San Diego and USC, and my main goal is to end up in finance after college.

I know both schools are respected, but I’m not sure which one has stronger recruiting, alumni connections, and overall access to finance opportunities for an undergrad.

One major difference is the academic setup. At USC, you can study business through Marshall, which gives employers a straightforward place to recruit undergraduates interested in finance. That matters because many finance firms, especially in investment banking, private wealth, and corporate finance, recruit more heavily from schools with visible business programs and organized student pipelines. UC San Diego is excellent academically, but it does not have the same undergrad business-school presence, so the path into finance is usually less built-in.

The alumni piece also leans USC. In Southern California finance circles, USC’s network is notably strong and often very willing to help students with informational interviews, referrals, and internship leads. That kind of school loyalty can make a real difference in competitive fields where early internships and personal connections matter a lot. UC San Diego has a solid alumni base, especially in STEM and research-oriented industries, but it is not as famously plugged into finance recruiting.

Recruiting access follows from that. USC students are more likely to find finance-specific student organizations, on-campus employer engagement, and a larger concentration of peers targeting banking, consulting, and related roles. UC San Diego can still get you into finance, especially if you are proactive about networking in San Diego and LA, but you will probably need to build more of the pathway yourself rather than step into an already established one.

For an undergrad whose priority is finance recruiting and alumni reach, USC has the edge in the ways that matter most.
