Is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Brown better for undergraduate research opportunities?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus access. UIUC has enormous research volume, especially in engineering, computer science, and the sciences, but that size can make labs feel more layered and competitive at first. Brown has fewer total labs, yet undergraduates are a more central part of the academic culture, so motivated students often find it easier to build direct relationships with faculty earlier.

For undergraduate research specifically, Brown usually has the edge in accessibility. Its smaller undergraduate population, open curriculum, and strong emphasis on independent intellectual work tend to make professors more reachable and make it easier to shape your schedule around research.

UIUC absolutely offers outstanding research opportunities, and in some fields the sheer breadth is hard to match. If your interests are in areas like engineering, CS, physics, agriculture, or large-scale lab research, UIUC can be exceptional because there are so many active projects and well-funded groups. The catch is that at a very large public research university, you may need to be more proactive and persistent to stand out, and early mentorship can depend more on the specific department or lab.

For relationship-building with professors, Brown is usually the more reliable environment. Smaller classes and a more undergraduate-focused feel often make faculty interaction less intimidating and more frequent. At UIUC, strong faculty connections are very possible, but students often have to navigate bigger classes and a more decentralized research ecosystem before those relationships deepen.

So if the question is not which school has more research in total, but which one tends to make undergraduate research more accessible for a motivated student without much prior experience, Brown is the better answer. UIUC is a terrific place to do research once you break in, especially in technical fields, but Brown more consistently makes undergrads feel like they belong in the research conversation from the start.
