Is University of Washington or Georgetown worth it for college?

Both can absolutely be worth it, but they are worth it for different kinds of students and at very different price points. Georgetown tends to make the most sense for students who will actively use its location in Washington, DC, its very strong alumni network, and its recruiting pipelines in politics, international affairs, policy, consulting, and finance. The University of Washington makes the clearest value case for students, especially in-state students, who want a major research university with strong academics, access to Seattle’s tech and health ecosystems, and a much more favorable cost-to-opportunity balance.

Georgetown is often the better investment for someone who wants a smaller private-school environment with close access to internships during the school year and fields where brand name and network matter a lot. Its strengths are especially visible in government, foreign service, public policy, and related career paths. If a student is excited by that world and the cost is manageable without taking on heavy debt, the return can be very real because Georgetown’s DC setting is part of the education, not just the backdrop.

University of Washington fits the student who wants breadth, flexibility, and strong upside without paying private-school tuition. UW has serious research resources, respected programs across many fields, and excellent access to Seattle employers, especially in technology, engineering, computer science, biotech, and medicine-adjacent areas. For an in-state student in particular, UW is often one of the strongest value options in the country because the opportunities are high while the cost can be far lower than Georgetown.

The biggest practical divider is debt. Georgetown can be worth it if your family can afford it or if your aid package keeps borrowing at a reasonable level. UW can still be worth it out of state, but the value becomes less automatic once the price climbs, especially if you are not entering one of its strongest programs.
