UC San Diego vs Wellesley for STEM careers: which is better for internships, research, and job opportunities?
I’m a high school senior trying to decide between UC San Diego and Wellesley for STEM. I’m interested in building a strong path toward internships, research experience, and eventually a job in a science or tech field.
Both schools seem strong in different ways, so I’m trying to understand how they compare for long-term STEM career opportunities.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and proximity versus a small women’s college network. UC San Diego gives you direct access to a huge STEM ecosystem in San Diego, with nearby biotech, engineering, research institutes, and a very large volume of labs on campus. Wellesley offers much smaller classes, closer faculty attention, and excellent cross-registration access to MIT and opportunities in the Boston area, but you usually have to be more intentional about piecing those resources together.
For internships and early job pipelines, UC San Diego has an edge because the school itself is deeply embedded in a major science and tech corridor. That matters for biotech, bioengineering, computer science, data science, neuroscience, and related fields, where location and employer volume can make networking and semester-time internships easier. Wellesley is very strong for research too, just in a different format. You are more likely to get personal mentoring quickly, and the Wellesley alum network is especially powerful and loyal. The MIT cross-registration option is real and valuable, but it is not the same as being enrolled at MIT full-time, so the benefit depends on how actively you use it. For a student who wants close advising, strong writing and communication skills alongside STEM, and a women-centered academic environment, Wellesley can set up excellent outcomes.

Wellesley can absolutely lead to top outcomes, especially if you make aggressive use of Boston-area resources and the alum network.
