Is UC San Diego or the University of Richmond better for business?

For undergraduate business, the University of Richmond has the clearer edge. Richmond actually has an undergraduate business school, the Robins School of Business, while UC San Diego does not offer a traditional undergrad business major in the same way. That matters because Richmond gives you a more direct business curriculum, easier access to business faculty, and a campus structure built around undergraduate business students.

Richmond’s biggest advantage is academic focus. Through the Robins School, students can study areas like accounting, finance, marketing, and management in a dedicated business environment. UC San Diego is excellent academically, but its strengths are more concentrated in STEM, economics, data-driven fields, and interdisciplinary programs rather than a classic undergrad business path.

Richmond also stands out for access and undergraduate attention. It is much smaller, so business students typically have closer relationships with professors, easier advising, and more direct access to internships, leadership roles, and recruiting support. At UC San Diego, there are certainly strong opportunities, especially because of the school’s scale and location, but students often have to be more proactive in navigating a larger system.

Career-wise, Richmond is especially attractive if you want a traditional business launch, particularly on the East Coast, with support into finance, consulting, accounting, and corporate roles. UC San Diego can be very appealing if you are interested in business-adjacent paths tied to tech, analytics, entrepreneurship, or economics, especially in Southern California. But if the question is which school is better specifically for business, Richmond is the more straightforward and purpose-built choice.
