Is UC Berkeley better than UC Irvine for an economics major?

I’m a high school student trying to decide between UC Berkeley and UC Irvine for economics. I know both are strong schools, but I keep seeing different opinions about which one is better for studying econ and building a strong career path.

I want a straightforward comparison of the economics programs and the overall reputation for this major.

The biggest practical tradeoff is prestige and recruiting power versus a somewhat less intense, more flexible experience. For economics specifically, UC Berkeley has the stronger name recognition, a deeper economics tradition, and more reach into top finance, consulting, policy, and research pathways. UC Irvine is still a respected option, but Berkeley carries more weight nationally and internationally for econ.

At Berkeley, economics benefits from a very established department, broader course offerings, stronger visibility in academic research, and closer proximity to major employers in the Bay Area. The Berkeley economics environment can also be more intense, and getting into certain classes or standing out may take more effort.

UC Irvine’s economics program is solid and can absolutely lead to strong outcomes, especially if you take initiative with internships, research, and quantitative coursework. Irvine can feel more manageable day to day, and some students prefer the campus environment and pace. Its location in Orange County also gives access to business and finance opportunities, though the overall recruiting pull for economics is not as strong as Berkeley’s.

If the question is purely which school is better for economics in terms of academic reputation and career signaling, the answer is UC Berkeley. Irvine is a good choice, but Berkeley is the one that will usually open more doors automatically for an econ major, especially for highly competitive careers and graduate study.
