Is UC Irvine or UC Berkeley better for finance careers?

I’m trying to decide between UC Irvine and UC Berkeley and finance is the main field I’m interested in. I know both are strong schools, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally better if I want to go into finance after college.

I’m mostly looking at how each school is viewed by recruiters and how well they can help with finance internships and jobs.

UC Berkeley has the clearer edge for finance careers. Its proximity to the Bay Area, stronger national reputation in business and economics, and much deeper alumni presence in banking, investing, and consulting make it the more powerful launchpad for finance recruiting.

The biggest differentiator is recruiting access. Berkeley students benefit from much heavier on-campus attention from top financial firms, especially for investment banking, buy-side roles, and competitive finance internships.

The second difference is brand recognition within finance. Berkeley carries broader prestige with employers across Wall Street, San Francisco, and major national firms, and that matters in fields where recruiters sort quickly by school and network. UC Irvine is well regarded and can absolutely place students into finance, especially in Southern California, but it does not have the same built-in pull with elite finance employers.

Another concrete advantage is ecosystem. Berkeley has a much larger concentration of students targeting finance, which creates more student-run funds, technical interview prep, peer mentorship, and alumni outreach culture. That environment can make a real difference when you are trying to land early internships and learn the recruiting process fast.

UC Irvine still has value, particularly if cost, location, or personal fit point you there. For corporate finance, accounting-adjacent paths, commercial banking, and some regional finance roles, Irvine can work very well. But if the question is which school is more favorably viewed by finance recruiters and offers stronger access to internships and jobs, Berkeley is the one with the stronger position.
