Is Arizona State University or the University of Washington better for pre-med?

The University of Washington is the stronger pre-med option for most students. UW gives you access to a major academic medical ecosystem through UW Medicine, plus research and hospital opportunities tied to a major public research university. For pre-med, that usually matters more than just having the required classes on paper.

The biggest differentiator is clinical and research access. In Seattle, UW students are near hospitals, medical centers, and labs connected to UW Medicine and its broader health sciences network. That creates pathways for shadowing, clinical volunteering, public health exposure, and biomedical research, which are all valuable when building a medical school application.

Another advantage is the academic environment around the life sciences. UW has deep offerings in biology, neuroscience, public health, biochemistry, and related fields, and those departments are closely tied to active research. That can make it easier to find faculty doing work that connects to medicine, whether your interests lean bench science, population health, or community-based care.

ASU is still a legitimate pre-med path, especially if cost is much lower or you know you’ll thrive better there. It has solid science programs, and motivated students can absolutely reach med school from ASU. But compared head-to-head, UW tends to offer a more concentrated medical and research environment, which gives pre-med students more high-level opportunities in one place.

One thing to keep in mind is that pre-med success also depends on GPA, not just prestige or opportunity. If ASU would be significantly more affordable or would make it easier for you to earn top grades while still getting experience, that can outweigh UW’s edge.
