Is Carnegie Mellon or Boston University more urban?

Boston University usually feels more urban in day-to-day life. Its campus runs right through Boston along Commonwealth Avenue, with city streets, apartment buildings, shops, restaurants, and public transit woven directly into the student experience. You are not stepping out of a contained campus into the city at BU because the city is already part of the campus.

BU tends to fit students who want constant street activity and are comfortable with a campus that feels linear, busy, and fully embedded in an active neighborhood. The Green Line runs along the campus, major roads cut through it, and the buildings are mixed into the normal rhythm of Boston. That creates a very city-centered feel, but it also means less of a traditional enclosed campus atmosphere.

Carnegie Mellon is urban too, but it feels more set apart. It sits in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood near Pitt and major museums, so you still have access to a real city environment, but the campus itself is more self-contained and clearly defined. When you are on CMU’s campus, it usually feels more like being at a university that happens to be in a city, rather than being fully absorbed into the city grid.

CMU makes more sense for someone who wants urban access without feeling like they are constantly in the middle of downtown-style activity. You can reach neighborhoods, restaurants, and cultural spots fairly easily, but the immediate campus experience is more insulated than BU’s. So if your main question is which one feels more like it is in the middle of the city, Boston University is the clearer answer.
