Pepperdine fits students who love a peaceful, visually stunning setting and do not mind that social life can depend more heavily on the university itself. Malibu is a major draw, and for some students the ocean views and residential campus create a close-knit, almost retreat-like atmosphere. At the same time, that same setting can feel restrictive if you want spontaneous off-campus activity or a busier college-town energy.

For a student prioritizing welcoming and strong community, both can work, but the kind of community differs. Chapman often comes across as more outward-facing and socially accessible, while Pepperdine can feel tighter-knit and more intentional, partly shaped by its Christian identity and campus culture. If “strong community” to you means frequent campus interaction in a quieter environment, Pepperdine may click more.
