Columbia is usually viewed as more prestigious overall, especially in college admissions and elite academic reputation. It is an Ivy League university, and is often grouped with a smaller set of highly selective private institutions in national conversations about prestige.

One major reason is selectivity and institutional positioning. Columbia is a private university with a long-standing Ivy identity, and that label matters to many people even outside higher education. When people casually rank schools by prestige, Ivy League membership often shapes the answer immediately, regardless of the fact that UCLA is also an outstanding university.

Another difference is how each school is perceived across industries. Columbia tends to have a stronger prestige edge in fields where employer perception and old-school academic branding carry a lot of weight. UCLA has excellent outcomes too, but its reputation is often described more in terms of being a top public university than as part of the very top private-school prestige tier.

UCLA’s brand is still extremely powerful, just in a somewhat different way. It has broader mainstream name recognition, a huge alumni network, and national visibility through athletics and California influence. In some contexts, especially on the West Coast, people may view UCLA as just as impressive in practical terms, even if Columbia still gets the edge in pure prestige language.
