Is UC Berkeley or Tufts worth it for a biology major?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus access. UC Berkeley gives you a huge research ecosystem, exceptional depth across biological sciences, and strong name recognition in science, but it can feel more competitive and less personal. Tufts offers smaller classes earlier, easier faculty access, and a more undergraduate-centered environment, though it does not match Berkeley’s sheer breadth of labs, departments, and science infrastructure.

For biology specifically, Berkeley has a real edge in overall academic depth. Its connections across integrative biology, molecular and cell biology, public health, engineering, and nearby Bay Area research institutions create a lot of opportunity if you want to explore different subfields or eventually pursue research, biotech, medicine, or graduate study. That matters for long-term value because biology careers often depend on what you do beyond the classroom, and Berkeley tends to offer more pathways at scale.

Tufts is still a very strong choice, especially if you know you learn best in a more guided setting. It has solid biology teaching and strong access to Boston-area hospitals and research. In practice, some students may find it easier to build close mentoring relationships there, which can help with recommendations, research entry, and overall academic support.

If cost is similar, Berkeley is the stronger pick for biology overall because its scientific depth and long-term professional network are hard to beat. If Tufts would give you substantially better access to professors, less pressure, or a noticeably better financial outcome, that can absolutely outweigh Berkeley’s advantages. But on biology alone, Berkeley has the clearer advantage.
