Cornell vs Dartmouth for outdoor recreation: which campus is better for hiking, skiing, and general outdoors access?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Dartmouth gives you a more immediate, everyday outdoors culture right outside campus, while Cornell gives you a larger university setting with strong outdoor access that often takes a bit more planning. Dartmouth is in Hanover, a small town with quick access to trails, the Connecticut River, and a campus culture where being outside is very built in. Cornell, in Ithaca, has gorgeous natural surroundings too, especially gorges, waterfalls, and nearby state parks, but the experience feels a little less centered on outdoor recreation as the default social rhythm.

For hiking, both are excellent, but Dartmouth has the edge for day to day convenience and outdoor identity. Hanover is close to the Appalachian Trail and surrounded by New Hampshire and Vermont outdoor options, so it is easy to make hiking part of a normal week. Cornell has great local hiking in and around Ithaca, including gorge trails and places like Buttermilk Falls and Treman, but the broader mountain access is not quite as immediate.

For skiing, Dartmouth is the clearer winner. Dartmouth Skiway is directly affiliated with the college and unusually convenient for students, and northern New England gives you strong access to additional ski areas. Cornell students can ski in the region, but it is not as integrated into campus life or as easy to do casually on a regular basis.

For general outdoors access, Dartmouth usually feels more immersive. The Dartmouth Outing Club is one of the school’s signature organizations, and outdoor trips, cabins, skiing, and river activities are a visible part of student life. Cornell absolutely has outdoor clubs and a beautiful setting, but because it is a much larger university, the outdoors scene can feel more like one option among many rather than a defining feature of campus culture.
