How does UMass Amherst compare to Notre Dame in overall reputation?

Notre Dame has the stronger overall national reputation. It is widely recognized across the U.S. as a highly prestigious private university with a strong alumni network, broad name recognition, and a reputation that extends well beyond any one region. UMass Amherst is a respected flagship public university, but its reputation is more program-dependent and usually does not carry the same across-the-board prestige as Notre Dame.
