How does campus culture compare between UMass Amherst and UIUC?

UMass Amherst tends to fit students who want a lively flagship campus with a more New England, liberal-arts-influenced feel. Its location in a true college town and its connection to the Five College Consortium make it easier to mix a large-university experience with classes, events, and friends across nearby smaller colleges. Students often point to the strong dining culture, active residence-hall life, and a social scene that includes parties but is not defined solely by Greek life.

The overall atmosphere at UMass can feel politically engaged, creative, and relatively relaxed outside of high-demand majors. There is plenty of school spirit, especially around hockey and major campus events, but the Big Ten sports identity is not as central to everyday student life.
