UMass Amherst vs New York University for marketing: which is the better choice?

I’m trying to decide between UMass Amherst and NYU for marketing and I’m stuck because both seem strong in different ways. I care about getting a solid business education, internship opportunities, and a degree that will help me get a marketing job after college.

I’m mainly looking for a clear comparison of the two schools for marketing specifically, not just general reputation.

For marketing specifically, NYU tends to stand out if you want a career path tied closely to New York City, brand strategy, media, advertising, luxury, entertainment, or internships during the school year. UMass Amherst makes more sense for a student who wants a strong, more traditional business-school experience with a likely lower overall cost, a big-campus environment, and solid preparation for marketing roles through the Isenberg School of Management. Both can get you to a marketing job, but they do it through noticeably different ecosystems.

NYU is especially appealing for students who want school and industry to overlap constantly. Being in New York gives you access to part-time internships during the semester, networking events, agency exposure, and employers in media, fashion, tech, finance, and consumer brands. For marketing, that matters because so much of the field is tied to live market activity, client-facing work, and internships that can turn into full-time offers.

UMass Amherst fits students who want a classic campus experience and a business program with a strong undergraduate identity. Isenberg has a good reputation in business recruiting, and its marketing preparation is credible and well established. You may need to be more intentional about reaching major-city internships during the summer rather than relying on the school-year location itself, but the business education is respected and the alumni network is meaningful, especially in the Northeast.

If your goal is broad marketing employability, neither school closes doors. The real distinction is how you want to build experience. NYU gives you proximity, pace, and access, which is especially valuable if you are ready to network early and often. UMass gives you a more contained college environment and often stronger value, which can matter a lot in a field like marketing where early salaries are not always huge.

For a student who is highly career-driven, wants internships woven into college life, and is excited by urban professional hustle, NYU has the sharper edge. For a student who wants strong business training, a more traditional student experience, and better cost efficiency if that applies to your offer, UMass Amherst is a very defensible pick for marketing.
