Is UMass Amherst or Barnard harder to get into?

Barnard is harder to get into than UMass Amherst overall. Barnard has a much smaller class size, a far more limited number of seats, and an applicant pool shaped by its location in New York City plus its partnership with Columbia. UMass Amherst is a well-regarded public flagship, but it admits on a broader scale and evaluates many applicants in the context of in-state access and large-university enrollment needs.

One big differentiator is institutional size and capacity. Barnard enrolls a relatively small undergraduate population and operates more like a highly selective liberal arts college, which means there are simply fewer openings each year. UMass Amherst is much larger, with many more total undergraduates and more room across colleges, majors, and pathways, even though some programs within UMass can be much more competitive than the university overall.

Another difference is the applicant pool each school attracts. Barnard draws students specifically seeking a women’s college experience combined with cross-registration and campus life connected to Columbia, so its applicants are often very intentionally self-selecting and academically strong. UMass Amherst attracts a wider range of applicants, including many students applying as part of a balanced public-university list, which makes the overall selectivity picture less compressed at the very top.

The way people usually compare them is to separate overall university admission from program-level competitiveness. If the question is simply which school is tougher to enter in the broadest admissions sense, Barnard is the tougher admit. If you are comparing a specific UMass Amherst major such as nursing, engineering, or computer science, that can be a closer conversation than the overall school-to-school comparison.
