How does admissions difficulty compare between UMass Amherst and Northeastern for undergrad applicants?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Northeastern is notably more selective overall, while UMass Amherst is selective in a more program-dependent way. In plain terms, Northeastern should usually be treated as a harder reach for most undergrad applicants, whereas UMass Amherst is more often in the target-to-reach range depending on your major, grades, and residency. For in-state Massachusetts students especially, UMass Amherst can feel more accessible than Northeastern, though some UMass programs are still quite competitive.

Northeastern’s applicant pool has become extremely large, and its admissions process is typically tougher across the board because of both demand and the school’s national draw. Strong academics alone do not make it predictable. UMass Amherst is also well regarded and can be selective, but its overall admissions bar is usually less intense than Northeastern’s.

The important wrinkle is major. At UMass Amherst, programs such as business, computer science, engineering, and nursing can be much harder to enter than the university overall.
