UMass Amherst vs University of San Diego for finance careers: which is better for recruiting and internships?
I’m trying to choose between UMass Amherst and the University of San Diego, and my main goal is to build a career in finance after college.
Both schools seem solid overall, but I’m not sure which one has the stronger pipeline for finance recruiting, internships, and getting into good entry-level jobs after graduation.

For finance specifically, UMass Amherst is likely the stronger option if you want a broader recruiting market and easier access to East Coast finance hubs. Its Isenberg School of Management has a well-known undergraduate business presence, a larger alumni base in business-related fields, and proximity to Boston and New York that tends to matter for internships during the school year as well as full-time recruiting.
USD can work well for a student who wants a smaller, more personal campus environment and is especially interested in building a career in Southern California. The Knauss School of Business has good regional connections, and being in San Diego can help with internships in wealth management, commercial banking, corporate finance, and smaller investment firms, but the finance ecosystem there is narrower than what you get through Boston and the Northeast.
UMass Amherst makes more sense for the student who wants a bigger business school environment, more classmates targeting finance, and a larger on-campus network of peers, clubs, and alumni pushing into internships. That kind of volume often helps because finance recruiting is partly about repetition: more employer touchpoints, more older students who know the process, and more alumni already placed in relevant firms.
USD fits the student who values close faculty access, smaller classes, and a polished private-school setting where networking may feel more personal. If your target is not only traditional high-finance paths but also business roles in corporate finance, real estate, private wealth, or regional banking in California, USD can be a very sensible place to start.
