Ohio State vs. Illinois for internship outcomes

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and employer access in two different forms: Illinois tends to have especially deep recruiting pipelines for technical fields, while Ohio State offers a huge alumni network, a very broad employer base, and a major-city state capital location that can make in-semester experience easier in more industries. For internships specifically, Illinois often stands out more for engineering, computer science, and other quantitatively focused paths because employers recruit there very intentionally. Ohio State is strong too, but its advantage is usually breadth across business, healthcare, public sector, communications, and many large national employers rather than the same concentrated reputation in a few technical areas.

At Illinois, the career ecosystem is very tied to established recruiting channels, large career fairs, and strong employer recognition in STEM. If you are leaning toward engineering, CS, data, or related fields, Illinois often gives students a slightly more direct runway to internships because companies already know where to find that talent. That does not mean internships are automatic, but the infrastructure is very mature.

Ohio State can be easier to leverage if you want flexibility across industries or want part-time experience during the school year. Columbus is a real asset here. Being in a large and growing city, with state government, healthcare systems, corporations, startups, and nonprofit organizations nearby, creates more opportunities to stack internships, research, or project-based work without waiting for summer. Its alumni network is also enormous and often very responsive.

In practice, I would give Illinois the edge for internship outcomes in technical majors where brand-specific recruiting matters a lot. I would give Ohio State the edge for students who are still exploring, want access to a wider mix of industries, or care about local in-semester internships as much as summer recruiting.
