What is the campus vibe difference between Stanford and Columbia?

Stanford feels more relaxed, residential, and self-contained, while Columbia feels faster, denser, and more tightly woven into city life. At Stanford, students spend a lot of time on a huge campus with warm weather, bike culture, and a social scene that often revolves around dorms, campus events, and outdoor spaces. At Columbia, the pace is more compressed and intense because students move between a compact campus and New York City, and that changes what everyday life feels like.

One major difference is where student life happens. Stanford is much more campus-centered. Because the campus is enormous, daily life can feel like its own bubble, with late-night dorm hangs, club events, and a lot of spontaneous interaction built around the residential system. Columbia has a defined campus too, but students are constantly flowing on and off it, so social life is less contained and often extends into neighborhoods, restaurants, internships, performances, and the rest of Manhattan.

The academic atmosphere also lands differently. Stanford students often describe the culture as ambitious but less visibly high-strung, partly because the physical environment is open and the social tone can feel more casual. Socially, Stanford often comes across as more outwardly laid-back and sunny, both literally and culturally. Columbia can feel more independent and urban, with students building varied routines across campus and the city rather than gathering in one central campus world.
